Was this unexplainable, phenomenon foretold in the bible? Yes it was look at; Joel 2:27 And ye shall know that I [am] in the midst of Israel, and [that] I [am] the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, [that] I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
2:29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. This account is repeated in Acts 2: 16-18 so it was planned and foretold by the prophet Joel. Was all Holy Scripture given by inspiration ? Yes it was. Do we misinterpret the verses that proclaim this? I believe we do.
2 Timothy: 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
When we take this out of the context in which it was said, which most do in order to prove their point that “all scripture is inspired” it sounds as if Paul said just that. But as any eighth grade student can tell you all sentences have to be looked at in context to their surroundings. If this had been a stand alone statement that would be the way to interpret it. But it is not a stand alone statement. It is a contextual statement.
2 Timothy 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned [them];
2 Tim. 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
As we can clearly see Paul speaks of Old Testament scripture. As we see, the scriptures Timothy was taught as a child could be no other than Old Testament scripture, referred to many times as the holy scripture.
2 Tim. 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
The second most quoted out of context new testament scripture is also used to prove the same argument is;
2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
2 Peter 1: 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
Those who use Peter for conformation simply leave out two words that are very important to understanding just what Peter said; those two words are (OLD TIME) that little word context comes into play once again, If we were to say those two words it would be acceptable to consider we were talking of the years directly after the death of Jesus. But since that time was contemporary to Peter what time do you suppose he was speaking of? OLD TESTAMENT time.
What was the design/ purpose of the Holy Spirit? As we know it.
To reveal future events; Acts 1:16 Men [and] brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
Acts 28: 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
1 Peter 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
To reveal the mysteries of God. Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
1 Cor: 2 :10 But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
To testify against sin
2 kings 17:13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, [and by] all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments [and] my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.
Neh. 9:30 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
Mic: 3: 8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.
John 16 : 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
by what mode did the spirit bring his message?Hebrews: 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Peter 1: 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
Isa: 6: 8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.
Eze: 11: 24 Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.
Num 12: 6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, [I] the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, [and] will speak unto him in a dream.
I could spend much more time on this subject, with many more verses of scripture but if I have not made my point by now it cannot be made by me. My conclusion; The Holy Spirit is “GOD” and he spoke to people through prophets who he enlightened through , WORD, VISION, DREAM, and other ways.Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Hebrews 1: 3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
As we see God in these times has spoken to people through his son, and not prophets. God’s son Jesus spoke to us also through his apostles, who he blessed with the Holy Ghost at his leaving this earth, Jesus’ apostles spoke to us through both the spoken and written word. After the death of John the apostle there is no verified trustworthy evidence that the Holy Spirit has ever used these methods or modes of communication to his people again. Except the written word/ The Holy Bible.
